What size air pillow do I need for my pool?
Match the pillow to your pool diameter. A 4' x 4' air pillow works for round pools up to about 18', a 4' x 5' suits 18'–21', and a 4' x 8' covers most 21'–24' pools. For 27' and larger rounds, or oval pools, use a 4' x 15' pillow or two smaller pillows placed end to end. The goal is a pillow that keeps the cover crowned in the middle so water and debris run to the edges — not one that fills the pool.
How much should I inflate a winter air pillow?
About 50–60% full — soft enough to push in easily with your hand. This is the single most common mistake in a pool closing. A fully inflated pillow has no room to compress when ice expands against it, so it simply splits, and it is also far more likely to pop on the first cold night as the trapped air contracts and then re-expands. An under-inflated pillow does its job and survives the winter.
How do I keep my air pillow from drifting to the side of the pool?
Tether it. Most pillows have grommets at the corners — run light rope from those grommets to the pool's top rail or through the cover grommets so the pillow stays centered. A double chamber tube has two independent compartments, so a failure in one still leaves the other holding water. How full should I fill water tubes?
Roughly two-thirds full, never to capacity. The water inside the tube freezes just like the water in your pool, and it needs room to expand — a tube filled to the top will split along a seam on the first hard freeze. Two-thirds gives enough weight to hold the cover against wind while leaving expansion room. Lay them end to end around the entire perimeter with no gaps, since a single open span is where wind gets under the cover.
