Pool ozonators fall into two technology categories: UV ozonators use ultraviolet lamps at 185nm to convert oxygen molecules into ozone — they are quieter and lower-maintenance but produce lower ozone concentrations than CD systems. Corona discharge (CD) ozonators generate ozone by passing air or oxygen through a high-voltage electrical field — they produce higher ozone concentrations and are more suitable for large or heavily loaded pools. A pool ozonator is one of the highest-return upgrades for an existing pool. Ozone (O₃) oxidizes chloramines, bacteria, algae precursors, and organic contaminants approximately 3,000 times faster than chlorine — and unlike chlorine, ozone leaves no chemical byproducts in the water. In practice, pools with properly sized ozonators operate at chlorine levels of 0.5–1.0 ppm (versus the typical 1–3 ppm target without ozone) while maintaining superior sanitation. When sizing an ozonator, match the system's rated pool capacity to your pool's actual volume — undersizing reduces effectiveness while oversizing only marginally improves water quality. For pools with existing Paramount or Hayward automation systems, verify the ozonator's integration requirements. Voltage must match your equipment pad circuit — most residential applications use 115V, while 230V units are common for larger pools or those with dedicated ozonator circuits.
